Recent, readily available computer technologies have enabled non-

musicians to create music which, along with new methods of replication

and distribution, have fulfilled punk’s DIY legacy. Although not part of

James Brook’s art practice, these ‘songs’, which are essentially collage, inform - and are informed by - his visual work: the coloured building blocks of musical notation in music-making software programs are echoed in the abstract constructions of his paintings.
